The Martini Racing Lancia Montecarlo Turbo is a legendary Group 5 race car that competed in endurance events
like the World Sportscar Championship. The Montecarlo Turbo, developed
by Lancia with input from Abarth, was powered by a 1.4-litre
turbocharged engine, producing around 450bhp. Despite its relatively
small engine size, the car was incredibly fast and nimble, thanks to its
lightweight chassis and superb aerodynamics.
Dressed in the iconic Martini Racing livery, the white, blue, and red
stripes draped across the body gave the car a distinctive and aggressive
look on the track. The Montecarlo Turbo was known for its handling and
high-revving power delivery, making it a formidable competitor against
rivals like Porsche and BMW. Lancia's Group 5 cars
were driven by a variety of racers over the years, making it harder to
attribute a specific race car to a single driver. However, during that
period, some of the most notable drivers for Lancia in the World
Sportscar Championship and endurance racing included:
Riccardo Patrese, A highly skilled Italian driver who raced for Lancia
in both sports cars and Formula 1.
Walter Röhrl, Legendary rally driver
who occasionally crossed over to race in sports cars with Lancia.
Michele Alboreto, Another Italian driver who went on to have a
successful Formula 1 career after his time with Lancia.
The Martini
Racing Lancia Montecarlo Turbo is a perfect example of Group
5's "Silhouette" racing machines. While it retained the
look of a street car, under the skin it was a true racing machine. Its
turbocharged 1.4-litre engine punched well above its weight, making it
highly competitive in endurance racing. Though results varied
across races, the Lancia Montecarlo's legacy is one of tenacity and
technical innovation, with a driver lineup that solidified its place in
motorsport history.
