"Ford GT40" (1968) Gulf

Ford GT40 Gulf classic car print
Artwork detail

[art #242]. Limited Edition Print by Steve Dunn.

The Ford GT40 in the iconic Gulf Oil colours of powder blue and orange is one of the most legendary race cars in motorsport history. This particular GT40 competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, driven by Martin Colvill and other team members. The GT40 was born out of Ford's rivalry with Ferrari, and it was specifically built to win at Le Mans, which it did in spectacular fashion from 1966 to 1969.

Powered by a thunderous 7.0-litre V8 engine, the GT40 produced well over 400bhp, allowing it to reach speeds exceeding 200mph on the Mulsanne Straight. The car's low aerodynamic body which stood just 40 inches tall (hence the name GT40), was designed to maximise downforce and stability at high speeds, while the Gulf colours became synonymous with Ford's dominance at Le Mans. This number 9 car, part of the Gulf racing team, represents one of the finest eras in endurance racing, with the GT40 becoming a legend on the track.
