The Ferrari F40
is perhaps the most iconic Ferrari ever built and was designed to
celebrate Ferrari's 40th anniversary. The F40 was the last car
personally approved by Enzo Ferrari, and it was intended to be the
ultimate road car, essentially a race car for the street. Beneath its
lightweight, aerodynamic bodywork, crafted largely from carbon fibre and
Kevlar, lay a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produced 478
bhp. This gave the F40 the ability to rocket from 0 to 60mph in a
blistering 4.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 201mph, making it the
first production car to break the 200mph barrier.
The F40 wasn't just about straight-line speed, it was about driving
purity. The car had no power steering, no ABS, and minimal creature
comforts, forcing the driver to be fully engaged with the machine. The
rear-wheel-drive layout, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission,
offered a raw, visceral driving experience that few cars since have been
able to match. The low-slung body and aggressive rear wing were designed
with aerodynamics in mind, ensuring stability at high speeds and optimal
downforce for cornering.
The Ferrari F40 is now a legend among supercars, revered not just for
its performance but also for its no-nonsense, driver-focused design. Its
red paintwork only adds to the F40's fierce, almost predatory look,
making it a fitting farewell to an era of analog driving mastery.
