[art #285]. Limited Edition Print by Steve Dunn.
The Chevrolet Corvette C1 (1960) here shown in red with it's famously stylish
white flash epitomises the early era of classic American
sports cars. The Corvette C1 was Chevrolet's answer to the growing
demand for sleek, powerful cars in post-war America, and by 1960, it had
matured into a true icon of automotive design. The curvaceous body
inspired by fighter jets, featured quad headlights, chrome accents, and
a distinctive dual-tone paint scheme giving the car a glamorous yet
at the same time aggressive look.
Under the hood, or 'bonnet' as we Brits would say, the 1960 Corvette C1 could be powered by a range of V8
engines, with the top-of-the-line model boasting a 283-cubic-inch
fuel-injected engine producing up to 315bhp. Paired with a
4-speed manual transmission, the C1 offered thrilling acceleration and a
top speed approaching 150mph, making it one of the fastest American
cars of its time. The independent front suspension and rear leaf springs
ensured the Corvette handled as well as it looked, providing a smooth
confident ride.
The C1 Corvette was the first true sports car from the USA and it offered both exhilarating performance and
head-turning style. It evokes
classic Americana, and is a car made for the open roads and a sense of freedom that
defined an entire generation of America's drivers.
