[art #281]. Limited Edition Print by Steve Dunn.
The BRM P261, with its unmistakable green body and orange nose is an
icon of Formula 1's golden era, driven to glory by the legendary
Sir Jackie Stewart OBE. Designed by Tony Rudd for British Racing Motors
(BRM), the P261 was a beautifully balanced car, created for the
1.5-litre Formula 1 regulations of the early 1960s. Its streamlined,
cigar-shaped body was both elegant and functional, designed for maximum
aerodynamic efficiency on the track.
Powered by a 1,498cc V8 engine, the P261 produced around 210bhp,
propelling it to speeds in excess of 180mph. The car's lightweight
tubular chassis and advanced suspension system gave it superb handling
and control, especially on the fast flowing circuits of the era. With
its mid-engine layout, the P261 helped BRM maintain its competitiveness
in the increasingly technological world of Formula 1 racing.
Sir Jackie Stewart, one of the sport's greatest drivers piloted the
P261 to victory in 1965 at Monza marking one of his earliest Grand Prix
wins and solidifying his reputation as a future star. The BRM P261, in
its distinctive British Racing Green remains a
cherished car from the early days of Stewart's legendary career and a
fine example of 1960s Formula 1 engineering.
