This 1977 BMW 320 driven by Marc Surer is a standout in the world of
touring car racing, shown here adorned in BMW's legendary Motorsport colours. The
car, part of the iconic BMW E21 series, was transformed into a
race-ready machine for the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC),
where it competed against the best from across the continent. Surer's
320 with its large rear wing and aggressive aerodynamics, signified
BMW's dedication to touring car racing during the late 1970s.
Powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and tuned for racing, the 320
produced up to 300bhp in competition trim. This allowed the
lightweight car to reach high speeds and deliver incredible performance
in both straight-line acceleration and cornering. The rear wing provided
crucial downforce keeping the car planted on the track at speed,
while the wide stance and race suspension offered exceptional
handling.
Marc Surer, a highly skilled Swiss driver, piloted this machine to numerous
successes, helping to cement BMW's reputation as a force in touring car
racing. The BMW 320 remains a beloved car among racing fans and a symbol
of BMW's motorsport prowess in the late 1970s, with its Motorsport
livery making it instantly recognisable to Bimmer enthusiasts worldwide.
